Hello, 4th Graders! I'm learning new things, too! I had fun today setting up my recording area and figuring out how to upload and share. I hope you enjoy the story so far! Ms. L Video Link: Kneeknock Rise Part 1 |
Dear 4th Grade Families,
I miss my 4th Graders! It's wonderful to hear from students in their Closure Journals, but it's not the same as seeing their smiling faces in our room! I recorded a video hello for students (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iOutxdpaHCse_M9mXuIG6bCN2kwXaPAQ/view?usp=sharing) and shared it to their Google Drives. Tomorrow I'll start a serial read-aloud for the week - I'll post those on the class website and share them to student Drive accounts as well. Video posting is new for me, so thanks to the fourth graders for being a forgiving audience as I learn! Over the next several days, I'll be emailing each family to check in and make sure students have the resources they need. I'll also be sharing scores and take-aways from the Mid-Mod 5 Math assessment for students who were able to complete it. If students are working on this week's optional Stay Engaged Plan (4th Grade Week 1 Stay Engaged Plan) please don't hesitate to reach out to ask for help or clarification. I'm working from home and love hearing from my students and families! Google Docs: If students would like to submit or share any of their work with me, I'd love to see what they're learning and give some feedback and encouragement. When using Google Drive, please remind them the best way to make sure I see it is to share their work with me with the blue button in the upper right-hand corner (even if it was previously shared); this will send a new email notification so I know to look for changes or updates. :) Wax Museum Biography Project: This year the Wax Museum will be an optional, at-home project. With the missed instructional time due to closures, we will not be able to use class time to instruct and work on Wax Museum this year. However, we know many students have been really excited about this memorable 4th grade experience, and we don’t want them to miss out! Students who participate will carry out a research project using a combination of print and online sources (this year the combination of sources will be extra flexible!). King County Libraries have closed, but eBooks from the library are still a great option: https://kcls.org/ Student researchers will communicate their information with:
School Counselor: I know these are troubling times and scary for children (and adults). Our school counselor, Heather Kern, is standing by (remotely: [email protected]) with resources which may be of support to families whose children are experiencing anxiety. School Closure Journal Writing: I have shared a Google Doc with each student. They will need to go into their SVSD Google Drive. Their log in information will be on their pink page in their binders. They will be able to respond to my note and fill me in on what is happening with them/just touch base. Hopefully, after writing a new entry, they can “share” it with me again; then, I will receive an email notification. It's a little bit like being Ms. Larson's pen pal! : ) Class Paper: students can submit articles via Google Docs (or scan / send photos of comics or other hand drawn/made items) and I'll send out a student e-newsletter. (Students can check their Google Drive Shared folder for this.) Important Dates: 4/27 Tentative Return to School Date - fingers crossed! 6/25 Last day of school (revised date due to snow days) With thanks, Emily Larson 4th Grade, CVES [email protected] www.cves4.weebly.com
Dear 4th Grade Families,
I know these are troubling times and scary for children (and adults). Our school counselor, Heather Kern, is standing by (remotely: [email protected]) with resources which may be of support to families whose children are experiencing anxiety. Although we are waiting for more specific guidance from the SVSD on teaching/learning during the extended closure, I wanted to update you on some optional learning activities. There are no required assignments at this time, but I know many families might want to take advantage of activities and resources that continue 4th grade learning at home. It is not required obviously, but if parents want an activity I thought I’d share it. It’s a spring/Easter theme and is pretty cute. Zearn: For those using Zearn for math learning, I've had some questions about how students should be using it. Here's a possible outline for working on a lesson a day:
Wax Museum Biography Project: This year the Wax Museum will be an optional, at-home project. Independent and Family Learning Activities: Students have access to a number of SVSD-provided and other resources. Students should have all of their usernames and passwords recorded on the pink password page in their binders. If you’re having trouble with access or need any passwords reset or provided, email me!
Important Dates: 3/17 Report cards available on line at Family Access at 4 pm 4/27 Tentative Return to School Date - fingers crossed! 6/25 Last day of school (revised date due to snow days) With thanks, Emily Larson 4th Grade, CVES [email protected] www.cves4.weebly.com Students worked as teams to test solutions to an engineering challenge: create a building that could withstand an earthquake. Pictures of the teams building their structures are on the Students in Action page!
