Give Joy: Most of us in this community are so fortunate; we have more than we need. This holiday season, CVES is participating in its annual Give Joy Giving Campaign. The drive, which runs from 12/2 – 12/13, will be for non-perishable food items, toilet paper/toiletries, and small gifts/gift cards. See the list below for recommended grade level items: 4th - Toiletries- toothbrushes, floss, deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner/lotion. All - Gift cards. Please read the attached doc for more information.

Coming up this week in class:
Continuing our Eureka Math module on multiplication and division, writing narratives, investigating the way plate tectonics shape earth's features, reading a legend called Why the Sea is Salty, analyzing literary elements, and celebrating kindness!
Math: Our Module 3 covers multi-digit multiplication and division. Practicing math facts during this time will be imperative!

At-home Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes a night, with a goal of 100 minutes each week. Your signature is required on their weekly minute totals every Monday evening. I will be checking for signatures every Tuesday morning.
Reading: We are reading a folk tale from the Philippines, Why the Sea is Salty.
Our reading lessons focus on:
- Using Text Details to describe a setting
- Comparing and Contrasting Point of View
- Using Details to Determine Theme
- Analyzing Problems and Solutions
- Describing Characters and Events
- Determining Genre
- The mystery word is theme
Writing: We are beginning our study of narrative writing. Students will be working on stories with a beginning, middle, and end that include descriptive details for the setting, dialogue between characters, a clear sequence of events, and a problem and solution.
Science: Our scope is Plate Tectonics. The students will make observations from maps and models to explain the pattern of features on earth's surface.
Social Emotional Learning: We continue using the Second Step program in our classroom to teach these critical skills.
The Second Step program teaches skills in the following four areas:
1. Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, and be assertive when asking for help with schoolwork.
2. Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’
feelings. Students also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion.
3. Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when
experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger.
4. Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way.

Homework: This year, your child will be keeping track of assignments and homework in a weekly tracker.
