Holiday Giving: Please see the attached information regarding our holiday giving program!‘ Tis the season for giving here at CVES and in our community. Each year, we run a giving campaign in the month of December (12/3-12/18), collecting necessary items such as food and toiletries and also some small gifts for those in our community who are in need. 4th graders- Gift cards (Fred Meyer, QFC, Safeway), small gifts ($5-25) or canned/boxed food and toiletries.
Spelling Bee: Round 1 for 4th graders will be held at lunch time on January 14. More information and a list of words to practice can be found on the PTSA website's Spelling Bee page: http://www.cvesptsa.org/spelling-bee

Review and Keep at Home: Math practice pages, Different Perspectives practice page, print art from last week's Museo Art Lesson

Goal for the Week: I will check my conventions carefully while revising and editing.
Coming up this week in class:
Working on larger multiplication in Walk to Math, wrapping up our learning about different perspectives in SEL, reading a tall tale called "John Henry", learning about native plants with Nature Vision (thanks, PTSA!), writing narratives that include a theme, completing our Science topic on Rock Layers, and enjoying the 3rd grade holiday parade!
Challenge / Extra Credit Opportunities: Social Emotional Learning - Understanding different perspectives (attached) due Tuesday 12/11

Math Facts: Fourth grade students must be fluent in all multiplication and related division facts up to 12. Please use our on line program REFLEX https://www.reflexmath.com/go (username: [email protected]) or visit the 4th grade blog to learn strategies and interactive ways to practice math facts at home.
Larson Walk-to-Math: Continuing Extension Project: Collecting, displaying, and working with data; Topic 8 – Multiplying larger numbers; Coming after break: Topic 9 Division
At-home Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes a night, with a goal of 100 minutes each week. Your signature is required on their weekly minute totals every Monday evening. I will be checking for signatures every Tuesday morning.
Reading: We are reading John Henry.
Our reading lessons focus on:
- Using Text Details to describe a setting
- Comparing and Contrasting Point of View
- Using Details to Determine Theme
- Analyzing Problems and Solutions
- Describing Characters and Events
- Determining Genre
Writing: Students will work on writing narratives that include descriptive details for the setting, dialogue between characters, a clear sequence of events, and a problem and solution.
Conventions: We are working on correct punctuation for dialogue.
Science: Rock Patterns: Students will be identifying evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to explain changes to a landscape over time. We’ll be making and testing models, watching videos and reading about the work of geologist and paleontologists, and practicing the Claim, Evidence, Reasoning format to support explanations.
