Holiday Giving: Please see the attached information regarding our holiday giving program! ‘Tis the season for giving here at CVES and in our community. Each year, we run a giving campaign in the month of December (12/3-12/18), collecting necessary items such as food and toiletries and also some small gifts for those in our community who are in need. 4th graders- Gift cards (Fred Meyer, QFC, Safeway), small gifts ($5-25)
Cogat Testing for 4th graders will be completed on the afternoon of December 5th . You can help by reminding students to eat a good breakfast and get a good night’s sleep the night before! From the District Office: During the weeks of December 3rd- 14th all elementary schools will be administering the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to 4th grade students, during school hours. The CogAT assessment measures reasoning and problem-solving skills. There is no academic preparation needed for success with this assessment. Assessment results will be shared with you, through Skyward Family Access, in the spring.
The CogAT is one piece of data used to determine Middle School Math Pathways. For information about the middle school math pathways, please visit the District’s webpage: http://www.svsd410.org/Page/4975. For additional questions, please contact the Snoqualmie Valley School District Teaching and Learning Office.

Coming up this week in class:
Working on Math Topics 6 & 7 - starting to multiply by larger numbers, completing the COGAT test, learning about different perspectives in SEL, reading a tall tale called "John Henry", writing narratives that include a theme, and continuing our Science topic on Rock Layers!
Challenge / Extra Credit Opportunities: Social Emotional Learning - Understanding different perspectives (attached) due Tuesday 12/11; Student Speech - Famous Rock Formations (attached) due Friday 12/7; The mystery word is theme.
Spelling Bee: Round 1 for 4th graders will be held at lunch time on January 14. More information and a list of words to practice can be found on the PTSA website's Spelling Bee page: http://www.cvesptsa.org/spelling-bee
Social Emotional Learning: These are student reflections on how to recognize complex feelings (having more than one emotion about an event):
- At school, In 3rd grade, I was doing a play and I had to perform in front of 3rd and 2nd grade classes and parents. I felt really excited to perform, but also really nervous because I was performing for other people. All in all, I had fun.
- One situation I experienced more than one fellinings at at school is when my friend made changes to something I worked very hard on. I felt grateful because it feels nice to have a friend who cares about you but also sad because I didn’t want her to do anything to my hard worked on document. So this is my situation where I feel more than one complex feeling.
- Today I was excited to go to greenguards. But I was a little nervous because I might not like it. Or I might get bored. But i am also excited. It's almost time for me to go.
Math Facts: Fourth grade students must be fluent in all multiplication and related division facts up to 12. Please use our on line program REFLEX https://www.reflexmath.com/go (username: [email protected]) or visit the 4th grade blog to learn strategies and interactive ways to practice math facts at home.
Larson Walk-to-Math: Continuing Extension Project: Collecting, displaying, and working with data; Topics 6 & 7 – Multiplying larger numbers
At-home Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes a night, with a goal of 100 minutes each week. Your signature is required on their weekly minute totals every Monday evening. I will be checking for signatures every Tuesday morning.
Reading: We are reading John Henry.
Our reading lessons focus on:
- Using Text Details to describe a setting
- Comparing and Contrasting Point of View
- Using Details to Determine Theme
- Analyzing Problems and Solutions
- Describing Characters and Events
- Determining Genre
Writing: Students will work on writing narratives that include descriptive details for the setting, dialogue between characters, a clear sequence of events, and a problem and solution.
Conventions: We are working on compound words, suffixes and prefixes.
Science: Rock Patterns: Students will be identifying evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to explain changes to a landscape over time. We’ll be making and testing models, watching videos and reading about the work of geologist and paleontologists, and practicing the Claim, Evidence, Reasoning format to support explanations.
Volunteer Opportunities: Thanks, again, for all you do to support children, teachers and learning! Our class Signup can be viewed here: http://signup.com/go/UZYqOEz
