Today was the last day for students to get their 10 extra raffle tickets for turning in their Walkathon envelopes; Wednesday is the last day to turn in envelopes for raffle ticket credit. Thanks again for all the volunteer help punching laps, processing checks, and (still to come) distributing raffle tickets!
Our goal this week: Choose a mystery book and get it approved by Ms. Larson by Friday.
Some items in this Monday's take-home folder:
Sign and return: Weekly Update, Reading Log (in binders), Gravy Group Challenge Contract (optional)
Review and keep at home: Math fact tests, Math practice pages (varies by walk-to-math class), Summer Sandwich rough drafts
Class Directory: Paper copies of the final class directory went home in today's Monday folder. Electronic copy is attached to this week's email.
Gravy Group: Gravy Group challenge contracts went home in today's take-home folders. This optional program is a way for students to take their learning further in 4th grade. Please talk this over at home with your child, and if it is a good fit return the signed contract.
Mystery Book Report: Mystery book report packets went home today. This week students should be finding a book, getting it approved, and starting to read.
Attendance Hotline: If your child will be missing school or tardy for any reason, please be sure to call the attendance hotline: 425-831-4108 Due to changes in the district's policy, if a student is absent and the attendance line has not been called, our school secretaries are required to call all the emergency contact numbers in that student's file until they can find a reason for the absence. Please call the attendance line! The mystery word is: adjective
Late/Forgotten Items: Please make sure students are sent to school with all needed items - the office has been overwhelmed by lunch/binder/shoe/jacket/etc deliveries, and each item delivered results in an interruption of learning when the secretaries call into the class. Thank you!
Storyworks: Students can now access Storyworks content including audio and video by entering our class code: room19cub
October volunteer calendar: The revised October volunteer calendar is attached to this week's email. Thanks again for all you do to support our class's learning - we couldn't do it without you!!!
Counselor’s Corner- Heather Kern, CVES Counselor:
Happy October to all CVES families! Just a brief note of introduction, for those of you I have not yet met. I am thrilled to be a part of the Cascade View school family and have had a great start to the year here, working with and getting to know your lovely children. Some students and parents have asked, “What does a school counselor do?” and I thought I’d take a moment to explain my role in brief. Your child will see me in their classroom once a month or more, as I come into classrooms to teach lessons related to social skills, communication, conflict management, bullying/harassment, and academic success. One of my main responsibilities is to help students overcome any obstacles to learning and school success. To that end, I work with students on: organization, test-taking tips, study strategies, time management, focus challenges, etc. Sometimes, ‘removing obstacles’ means solving friendship problems, conflicts, or talking through a problem that has a student’s mind distracted from learning. I also have the privilege of working with students to build their leadership skills and experience through the peer mediator and peer tutor programs.
Since I am new to this school, I may be introducing myself to your child –if their teacher recommended it– so that they know who I am, what I do, and that I am another resource for them at CVES. If your child comes home to say that they ‘met with the counselor’, please do not be alarmed and know that it was only an introduction. I will always get parent permission in the event that I work with a child regularly or on a specific topic.
I want CVES students and parents to know that I am a resource for all of you so please feel free to reach out to me if you or your child need any extra support throughout the year. I can be reached at 831-4075 or [email protected]. I look forward to getting to know all of the awesome kiddos and families here and am happy to be a member of such a great school community.
Heather Kern
