From Mrs. Kern (CVES Counselor) / Ms. Eppers (CVES Counselor Intern) - The theme of my lessons this month in all grade levels has been Handling Strong Emotions. This week, I had the pleasure of visiting your child’s classroom to talk about this very important topic. We started by listing off as many emotions as we could think of and talked about how all emotions are good and normal and a part of life, but that we must learn to control the strong emotions and return to a balanced state of “happy”. Next, we talked about the warning signs that our body gives us whenever we are feeling too strong of a feeling. Students were able to identify that they feel tight, hot, sweaty, jittery, etc. Lastly, we talked about what to do whenever we are receiving those warning signs. Students did an activity in which they created a “Feel Good Plan”, containing several calm-down strategies that they either already do or would like to try in the future. As the holidays approach and excitement mounts, there might also be some other strong emotions that pop up: sadness over lost loved ones, anxiety over change in schedule, in addition to joy at being home with family and taking a much-deserved break. Please know that we are a team to support your son/daughter as they learn all about their feelings and how to control them. We hope you enjoy this holiday break and get some rest and relaxation. The mystery word is multiple.
Math: Our Module 3 covers multi-digit multiplication and division. Practicing math facts during this time will be imperative!

Upcoming:

Reading: We are reading a Native American legend, How the Stars Fell into the Sky.
Our reading lessons focus on:
- Using Text Details to describe a setting
- Comparing and Contrasting Point of View
- Using Details to Determine Theme
- Analyzing Problems and Solutions
- Describing Characters and Events
- Determining Genre
Writing: We are beginning our study of narrative writing. Students will be working on stories with a beginning, middle, and end that include descriptive details for the setting, dialogue between characters, a clear sequence of events, and a problem and solution.
Science: Our guiding question is: How does an animal hunt and find food? Students will be using models and writing CERs (Claim; Evidence; Reasoning) to describe that animals receive different types of information through their senses, process the information in their brain, and respond to the information in different ways.
