Veteran's Day Assembly: All veteran family, friends, and neighbors are invited to attend our Veteran’s Day Assembly on Friday, Nov. 9 at 9:20 am. Please let me know if you will have a veteran attending so we can properly honor him/her on Friday.
Mod Pizza Fundraiser for Camp Seymour: In addition to our fifth grade wreath sale this year, we are holding a MOD Pizza Fundraiser to help with the cost of camp. Social Emotional Learning: These are student reflections on how to communicate in an assertive way, and how it might help at school:
- I think being assertive with your body and voice means staying in a calm voice to make the person you are talking to feel like they are not in trouble. You should also keep your body facing the way where the person is standing. Being assertive could help in school because it would want to make them do nice things for you. If you weren’t being assertive, then they probably would feel like you don’t care about what they do or think. So, being assertive is probably the best way to be in school.
- To be assertive you need to look at the person in the eye.You need to Be firm and calm.Do not be in there face. Be serious and be friendly.
- What you should do with your body when you are being assertive is you should look the person you are speaking to in the eye and make sure you have your shoulders back and stand straight and tall (make sure not to lean in to close or the person you are trying to reason with will feel threatened and they will try to defend themself and then everything will just fall apart.) What you should do with your voice and face is to make sure not to wrinkle up your face and use kind words and make sure your voice is calm yet stern. How being assertive can help is if your passive no one will know what you want so they can’t give you what you need. If you are aggressive no one will want to give you what you need because you will be being rude. So this is how to be assertive and why it is important.
- What you do with your voice and body when you are being assertive is that your shoulders are back and your head is up. You also have to face the person so that he/she knows you are listening or talking to them if he or she is doing something mean or being inappropriate. Use a calm, firm voice so the person knows you are being serious, whereas if you are talking low, they may not here you, and if you are to loud and aggressive, they might be scared of you. Being assertive is a good way to communicate at school because if you are being passive, the person you are talking to may not here you. If you are talking aggressively, that means you are demanding things in a rude way.
Parent-Teacher Conferences: A rough draft of the conference schedule is attached to this week's email newsletter (not online on the website). Please check to confirm that I have your time correctly on the schedule. If you need to change your time, or if we have not yet scheduled one, please let me know as soon as possible! If students are accompanying parents, they may read or draw quietly in the hallway. Conferences are scheduled for 20 minutes.
Math Facts: Fourth grade students must be fluent in all multiplication and related division facts up to 12. Please use our on line program REFLEX https://www.reflexmath.com/go (username: [email protected]) or visit the 4th grade blog to learn strategies and interactive ways to practice math facts at home.
Larson Walk-to-Math: Topic 5: Multiplying by 1-digit Numbers. Goals: I can use place value understanding and multiplication properties to multiply by one-digit numbers. Challenge Goal: I can write algebraic expressions to show multiplication and division scenarios. I can use exponents and the Order of Operations to simplify and evaluate expressions.
At-home Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes a night, with a goal of 100 minutes each week. Your signature is required on their weekly minute totals every Monday evening. I will be checking for signatures every Tuesday morning.
Reading: We are reading Movers and Shapers.
Our reading lessons focus on:
- Using details and examples from the text as evidence to support comprehension
- Understanding point of view and text structure
- Determining the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text
- Analyzing the author’s word choices
- Engaging in collaborative discussions
Writing: Students will continue working on note taking, introducing a topic with a clear purpose, writing body paragraphs with meaningful elaboration, and wrapping it all up with an effective conclusion. Our next project focuses on an animal.
Conventions: We are working on adjectives, root words, suffixes and prefixes.
Science: Our guiding question is: How does an animal hunt and find food? Students will be using models and writing CERs (Claim; Evidence; Reasoning) to describe that animals receive different types of information through their senses, process the information in their brain, and respond to the information in different ways.
Volunteer Opportunities: Thanks, again, for all you do to support children, teachers and learning! Our class Signup can be viewed here: http://signup.com/go/UZYqOEz
If you'd like to volunteer and are not yet on the calendar, please let me know!
