Valentine’s Day will be celebrated on Thursday, 2/14 in Room 14. All students will have a Valentine’s mail sack/bag made and decorated at school. Due to food allergies and dietary restrictions, we would like to suggest that no candy be distributed at school with student cards. Any candy on cards will NOT be opened at school; it will be sent home. More information will be sent home in next week’s take home folder and newsletter. Thanks! We will have a low key celebration that afternoon with a healthy snack of red and pink fruits and some activities.

The season ends with a non-competitive 5K event.
The training schedule will be Mondays and Tuesdays from 3:30-5pm from March 4th - May 19th. Registration is open from now until January 18th. Sign your girl up today: Click Here
Social Emotional Learning: These are student reflections on why you might want to start a conversation with a classmate and some specific steps you can take that will help in having a successful conversation:
- You would want to start conversation with classmates because if you were to give them advice or wanted to ask them a question (Not during class time, of course), conversations would come in use. Two Second Step skills I would name are probably being assertive such as talking clearly, and facing the person and looking them in the eyes. Another Second Step skill I would name is giving an honest compliment. These would help by keeping the conversation going, and it would help being kind to the person.
- You might want to start a conversation with a classmate to get to know them better. Some tips are that you do not want your body language to be aggressive or passive. That way, the person you are talking to does not think you are invading their personal space OR they cannot see that you are nervous (if you are). Also, give the person you are talking to time to reply to what you say. If you do that, they do not think you are rude and like to interrupt. You could also give compliments so they think that you are kind and you have a better chance of becoming friend with them.
- The reason you would want to start a conversation is because, if you want to make a new friend because your new or even just want another friend you can’t wait for someone to notice you your going to have to spend your whole life without being noticed because you wait for people to come to you. You should go up to someone you like and want to be friends with them you should go up to them and ask if they like drawing or dogs or anything to see if you have something in common. Give them some space but don’t be all the way across the room, sit down next to them if they are sitting talk in a calm voice and don’t be aggressive. Give them with a wonderful complement say it in a assertive voice ( not passive or aggressive) those are some reasons to start a conversation.
State standardized testing (SBAC) for 4th grade begins in May. Our testing dates are: May 9; 14; 15; 21; and 22. Please try not to schedule medical/dental appointments or vacations on these days! Thank you!
Math Facts: Fourth grade students must be fluent in all multiplication and related division facts up to 12. Larson Walk-to-Math: Topics 10 - Division
Starting later this week: Topic 11 - Fraction Equivalence and Ordering
At-home Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes a night, with a goal of 100 minutes each week. Your signature is required on their weekly minute totals every Monday evening. I will be checking for signatures every Tuesday morning.
Reading/Social Studies: Reading to learn content areas like Social Studies and Science becomes much more important in intermediate and middle school years. We are reading Lewis and Clark (In Their Own Words) by George Sullivan. Students will be looking for the main idea and supporting details in our Lewis & Clark books. As we continue our Lewis and Clark unit, students will learn the difference between primary and secondary sources. They will understand the historical context and the importance of Lewis & Clark’s journey as a time of exploration, expansion, and encounter.
Writing: Students will work on writing opinion texts with clear topic sentences, three reasons to support their opinion, and text evidence or details/examples to explain their reasons.
Volunteer Opportunities: Thanks, again, for all you do to support children, teachers and learning! Our class Signup can be viewed here: http://signup.com/go/UZYqOEz
