Girls on the Run: CVES is excited to announce its first ever Girls on the Run team! Girls on the Run is an after-school program for girls in grades 3-5. Twice per week for 10 weeks, girls will have fun, make friends, run (or walk), and learn important life lessons. Trained and caring coaches lead the girls through interactive lessons and running activities. It is not just for active girls or runners...Girls on the Run is for EVERY girl! The season ends with a non-competitive 5K event.
The training schedule will be Mondays and Tuesdays from 3:30-5pm from March 4th - May 19th. Registration is open from now until January 18th. Sign your girl up today: Click Here
Social Emotional Learning: These are (more!) student reflections on why you might want to start a conversation with a classmate and some specific steps you can take that will help in having a successful conversation:
- I would start a conversation with classmates because i like talking to people i don’t like being a decoration in the classroom. And also if someone is sad i want to make them more happy! Two second step skills are not getting to close to them because they won’t be comfortable. Also ( skipped yellow because 2 bright.) another skill is don’t breathe really heavily in their face because again they will be uncomfortable. These can help by, Let’s say there is a new kid in the class and don’t make him or her uncomfortable or they won’t really like the class or classroom.
- Because it would help you get to know them. When I am in a conversation with my classmates I should stay on topic. You shouldn't start talking about soccer then all of the sudden change to talking about walmart. But it is acceptable to start talking about soccer but then end on talking about basketball. They are both related because they both have to do with sports. It's always good to at least not stay on one topic the whole conversation, but to at least change it to something pretty related to the first thing you were talking about.
- You want to start conversations because you can talk with your friends,or ask a simple question. You can start a complement or “Hey ya! whatcha doing?” Make sure to keep space with the other person. Also, don't change the topic don't do ex:”Hi...I like burritos...wanna come over?” Don't do that! Face the person and keep a pleasant tone of voice and give time for them to speak.
State standardized testing (SBAC) for 4th grade begins in May. Our testing dates are: May 9; 14; 15; 21; and 22. Please try not to schedule medical/dental appointments or vacations on these days! Thank you!
Valentine’s Day will be celebrated on Thursday, 2/14 in Room 14. All students will have a Valentine’s mail sack/bag made and decorated at school. Due to food allergies and dietary restrictions, we would like to suggest that no candy be distributed at school with student cards. Any candy on cards will NOT be opened at school; it will be sent home. More information is attached to this week's email newsletter. We will have a low key celebration that afternoon with a healthy snack of red and pink fruits and some activities.
Math Facts: Fourth grade students must be fluent in all multiplication and related division facts up to 12. Please use our on line program REFLEX https://www.reflexmath.com/go (username: [email protected]) or visit the 4th grade blog to learn strategies and interactive ways to practice math facts at home.
Larson Walk-to-Math: Topic 11 - Fraction Equivalence and Ordering
At-home Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes a night, with a goal of 100 minutes each week. Your signature is required on their weekly minute totals every Monday evening. I will be checking for signatures every Tuesday morning.
Reading/Social Studies: Reading to learn content areas like Social Studies and Science becomes much more important in intermediate and middle school years. We are reading Lewis and Clark (In Their Own Words) by George Sullivan. Students will be looking for the main idea and supporting details in our Lewis & Clark books. As we continue our Lewis and Clark unit, students will learn the difference between primary and secondary sources. They will understand the historical context and the importance of Lewis & Clark’s journey as a time of exploration, expansion, and encounter.
Writing: Students will work on writing opinion texts with clear topic sentences, three reasons to support their opinion, and text evidence or details/examples to explain their reasons.
Volunteer Opportunities: Thanks, again, for all you do to support children, teachers and learning! Our class Signup can be viewed here: http://signup.com/go/UZYqOEz
