Dear Fourth Grade Families,
Welcome back! I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing break! Some items in this Monday's take-home folder: Sign and return: teacher-assessed updates, April Reading Logs (in binders) Review and keep at home: Math fact tests, Math practice pages (varies by walk-to-math class), guitar art, St. Patrick's Day art, book order fliers Our goal for the week: "I will proofread my animal research writing carefully." SBA: Please see the attached letter from Mr. Wilson about the upcoming SBA assessments. 4th grade assessment dates are 4/21, 4/28, 5/6, and 5/13. Please try to avoid absences on these dates if at all possible. Makeup days will be available for missed testing. The mystery word is: transfer. Part of the attached letter from Mr. Wilson: The SBAC is aligned to the Common Core State Standards in literacy and mathematics and includes more rigorous content than the previous assessments. From the new assessments, districts will be able to gain valuable information and monitor student progress to ensure all students master the new standards and are prepared for college and career opportunities beyond high school. Because the Smarter Balanced assessments are more demanding than the previous MSP assessments and they are testing student knowledge and skills in different ways, we expect overall proficiency scores for students, schools, districts and the state will not be as high. In fact, states where early pilots of scoring have taken place, have found student scores on the SBAC are much lower than on the previous state assessments. This does not mean students are any less proficient than they used to be. It simply means we are holding students to a higher standard of learning. We expect over time, the scores will increase as our students become more adept at the new learning challenges posed by the Common Core Standards as well as the technology skills needed to be successful. From our Music Teacher, Mrs. Herb: Greetings from the Music room! Your 4th graders have a concert coming up soon! Be sure to mark Tuesday, April 21st on your calendars. It will be here at CVES at 7:00pm. We are presenting songs from many different places in the world, in many different languages. Also, we will demonstrate our recorder, drumming, and xylophone skills. Students should arrive at 6:45 wearing dressy concert attire. They should bring their recorders with them also. I hope to see you all there! April Scholastic Book Order: last day to order is next Monday, 4/20. Thanks again for helping us build our classroom library and add new learning materials! Helmets for PE: Next week's newsletter should include information from Mrs. Corder about the wheels unit in PE, and a request for students to bring their own helmets (probably starting next week).
