From the school counselor: Around this time of year, we begin to notice that our 4th grade students become increasingly distracted by social relationships. We start to hear comments about students ‘liking’ one another. This is usually followed by many students feeling stressed, thinking this is something expected of them now and not knowing how to handle that pressure. We like to use this as a ‘teachable moment’, reminding our students that their primary focus in school is academics and building enduring, quality friendships. To that end, our school counselor will be giving a lesson on this topic next week. If you have questions or concerns, contact Heather Kern or [email protected]. Thank you for your partnership.
Read-a-thon Fundraiser: In an effort to maintain our current level of support for school privileges such as art curriculum for students and grants for teachers, help PTSA reach our goal of raising $25,000 for our General Fund in this non-auction year. That's only $40 per student!
*UPDATE* As of this morning, students have already raised $ and can earn free prizes! That's a terrific start, but there are still 532 students who have not created Read-A-Thon profiles. It is easy:
STEP 1 By now, your child should have received a brightly colored promotional document in their backpacks that holds their personalized Secret Code. (Didn't see one? Email [email protected].) Use it to login at Read-A-Thon.com to build your student's very own page. You can open the account either by logging into Facebook or using an email address, and students can add a picture. Students get to pick a free PRIZE as soon as it's done!
STEP 2 Set verbal reading goals with your child, and then share their page with friends and family! The website offers the following options: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, email, text, and even printing your own flyer. The more times you share, the more sponsors your child may find to help support their efforts! Family and friends can make donations with their credit card or PayPal account, and students can choose fun prizes based on activity and amount of donations.
STEP 3 Keep track of your child's reading minutes each day through March 13 using the easy tracking buttons. It will only take a minute! Does your student fill out a reading log? That counts! Reading during school counts, too.

Reading Genre Study for March - Newbery Book Report: Most students in our class were able to find a book in the classroom library today and get started. Project packets went home today, and examples of finished projects can be seen on the project page of the 4th grade website. Students should be bringing their Newbery book and packet back to school every day, in case we have class time they can use to work on it.
Garden Club: Our first meeting of the fourth grade garden club will be March 10th during afternoon recess. To join garden club, students must research a plant that can be grown from seed in our area. For more information and a printable copy of the plant proposal form, see the Garden Club page on the 4th grade website.
March volunteer calendar: attached to this week's email. Thanks again for all you do to support our class's learning - we couldn't do it without you!!! Please let me know if this time doesn't work.
Coming Up This Week in Class: We are continuing to work on Math Topics 12 and 13 (fractions and mixed numbers), writing one-paragraph opinions in response to reading about issues, meeting with book clubs, and investigating space in science!
