Head Lice: A “pesky” health concern that all schools around the country address during the school year is the occasional presence of pediculosis (head lice) in school. We would like to recommend that you add to your schedule a regular time to check your child’s head for evidence of infestation with head lice. Parents need to join in partnership with the school to limit the spread of lice. We follow the recommendation of the Snoqualmie Valley School District for handing pediculosis cases. This includes that the child may return to school following treatment and the removal of live lice. We do not do school-wide, classroom-wide checks or screening, because a check at one point in time does not mean a child is lice or nit free. We ask for your cooperation in making this school year one in which head lice are managed successfully, through a school and parent partnership. Working together, let’s limit lice interruptions in school. If you find signs of lice on your student, resources can be found on the district website at http://svsd410.org/Page/207. Please notify your school nurse for tracking purposes. If you are unsure that your child has head lice, contact your health care provider. It is NOT advised to preventatively treat those who may have been exposed to head lice but do not have signs of an active infestation (live louse or nits within ¼ inch of scalp). If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us. At-home Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes a night, with a goal of 100 minutes each week. Your signature is required on their weekly minute totals every Monday evening. I will be checking for signatures every Tuesday morning.
Reading: Our reading lessons focus on:
- Using details and examples from the text as evidence to support comprehension
- Identifying main ideas and supporting details
- Identifying non-fiction text structures
- Determining the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text
- Engaging in collaborative discussions
Writing: Students are working on research and informational writing focused on stating a main idea (using a topic sentence) and providing supporting details.
Science: Our new scope is about Plate Tectonics. The students will make observations to provide evidence of the effects of weathering and erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation. We’ll be making and testing models, watching videos, reading, and practicing the Claim, Evidence, Reasoning format to support explanations.
Social Emotional Learning: We continue using the Second Step program in our classroom to teach these critical skills.
The Second Step program teaches skills in the following four areas:
1. Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, and be assertive when asking for help with schoolwork.
2. Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’
feelings. Students also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion.
3. Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when
experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger.
4. Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way.
Volunteer Opportunities: To see the calendar or to sign up to volunteer for Museo Art Lessons, use the Signup link here: https://signup.com/login/entry/477023421096088038
Thanks, again, for all you do to support children, teachers and learning!
Homework: This year, your child will be keeping track of assignments and homework in a weekly tracker. At home, please check the weekly tracker (located in the front of the binder) to support your child’s homework habits. It is also posted on our classroom blog daily. Math Facts: Fourth grade students must be fluent in all multiplication and related division facts up to 12. Please use our on line program REFLEX https://www.reflexmath.com/go (username: [email protected]) or visit the 4th grade blog to learn strategies and interactive ways to practice math facts at home.
