Report cards are available on-line this afternoon. I hope you will have a chance to discuss your student’s progress with him/her. This afternoon, the second trimester portfolios are coming home with your student’s green take home folder.

From April Herb: Greetings from the music room! Your 4th graders have a concert coming up in a few weeks. Make sure to mark it on your calendars: March 27th at 7pm here at CVES. They will be showcasing their singing (in multiple languages and styles!) and recorder playing. You don’t want to miss this once a year event! See you there. More details and a lyric sheet for at-home practice to follow.
Spirit Week (April 1st-5th): Spirit week is a fun opportunity for students to unite across grade levels and show Cub spirit.
- Monday (4/1): 80s Day - Show off your totally rad cub spirit with a flashback to the 80’s!
- Tuesday (4/2): Career Day - What is your dream job? Dress up in your future professional attire!
- Wednesday (4/3): Wacky Hair Day - Get creative with your wackiest hairstyle!
- Thursday (4/4): Year 3000 Day - Dress up in futuristic clothing that will feel like we traveled to the year 3000!
- Friday (4/5): PJ Day - Wear your coziest pajamas to school as we celebrate the last day together before break!

2nd Trimester Portfolios are coming home today in large manila envelopes! Portfolios include: 2nd trimester tests, math portfolios, Lewis & Clark art and projects, science journals, kindness lights, reading logs, and trackers.

Coming up this week in class: Continuing fractions and decimals in Walk to Math, learning about Managing Strong Emotions in SEL, reading a nonfiction text about volcanoes, writing a compare-and-contrast opinion about two texts, using desk maps to explore WA State geography, finishing Create-a-Country projects at home, and exploring drawing and shading techniques in our Museo art lesson (thank you PTSA)!
Challenge/Extra Credit Opportunities: Discovery Education Videos/Audios (see below) - write a 1-paragraph summary of each video/audio and turn it in for extra credit; Social Emotional Learning - Managing Strong Feelings (attached) due Tuesday 3/26
Discovery Education: We've added a new way for kids to keep exploring the ideas we're working on in class through Discovery Education online. Students can sign in to view selected video (or listen to audio clips). Extra credit option: write a one-paragraph summary of each video!
March Scholastic Reading Club Order: Last day to order is today, Monday 3/18. To place an order, go to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs, select "parent" and Continue. You'll need to create an account with your own user name and password (if you don’t have one yet), and use class activation code GPZ63 to connect to our class order. Books will be delivered in 1-2 weeks after the last day to order. As always, our class gets free books and materials with every online order placed. Thanks in advance for helping us expand our classroom library and programs! The mystery word is strait.
JOIN IN OUR CVES "BABY PRODUCT DRIVE" TO BENEFIT THE SNOQUALMIE VALLEY FOOD BANK: As part of the Kindness Initiative, we are partnering with the Snoqualmie Valley Food Bank in collecting donations for specific baby supplies. Through the end of March, we will be collecting size 4,5, & 6 Diapers, Baby Wipes, & Toilet Paper for our valley families in need of extra support through the Food Bank. Please bring your donations to your classroom and they will be collected from there. P.S. We are doing a friendly competition with OES to see who can bring in the most donations. Making Up Instructional Time Lost Due to Snow Closures
- February 4 (will be made up on Friday, May 24)
- February 5 (will be made up on Friday, June 14)
- February 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 (waiver request days)
- Converting 10 Early Release Fridays into full school days, beginning March 29 through June 7; and
- Adding 12 minutes to the end of EVERY school day, starting Monday, March 25, and extending through Thursday, June 13. (See the Revised School Start & Dismissal Times with extra minutes added, which will be effective March 25.)
State standardized testing (SBAC) for 4th grade begins in May. Our testing dates are: May 9; 14; 15; 21; and 22. Please try not to schedule medical/dental appointments or vacations on these days! Thank you!
Math Facts: Fourth grade students must be fluent in all multiplication and related division facts up to 12. Please use our on line program REFLEX https://www.reflexmath.com/go (username: [email protected]) or visit the 4th grade blog to learn strategies and interactive ways to practice math facts at home.
Larson Walk-to-Math: Topic 13 - Extending Fraction Concepts; Extension: Multiply 2 Fractions. Note: This is a longer topic, and the number of required IXL Skills / Math Menu projects needed to earn a 3 for Effort has been increased!
At-home Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes a night, with a goal of 100 minutes each week. Your signature is required on their weekly minute totals every Monday evening. I will be checking for signatures every Tuesday morning.
Social Studies: To review our geography vocabulary students will be completing a fun project called Create-A-Country (attached here). The rough draft will be completed in class by Wednesday and the final poster (provided) will be finished at home. It is due on Friday, March 22.
We are studying the geography of Washington State with desk maps. Coming soon: at-home (optional but highly recommended) WA State Topographic Map project
Reading: We are starting a nonfiction text on Earthquakes. Key reading skills in this unit include identifying main ideas and supporting details, comparing and contrasting, making inferences, understanding figurative language, summarizing a text, and citing text evidence to support ideas.
Writing: Students will continue writing opinion paragraphs with clear topic sentences, three reasons to support their opinion, and text evidence or details/examples to explain their reasons.
Conventions: We are working on correct punctuation for citing evidence in an opinion paragraph and using transition/linking phrases.
