Coming up this week in class: We're continuing Walk-to-Math learning, finishing our Natural Processes topic in science, reading an informational text about human body systems, revising and sharing our disaster writing, the mystery word is hazard, and submitting the student-designed "Rescue Vehicles" to the Drop Challenge!
Toymaker Permission forms: Look for a permission form coming home in next week's take-home folder! We'll need those back quickly - thank you!
Reflections: Information went home today! The students were excited about all of the different options to create and enter. Projects are due December 15th.

Museo Art Lesson: Mondrian Brush Control Acrylics

In this lesson, the work of Piet Mondrian inspired students to create a piece that utilized careful brush control. On day one, students learned about De Stijl and Piet Mondrian’s work. To begin, each student used a ruler to create a series of various squares. Once completed, students learned to carefully use their brush to paint three squares with the primary colors of Red, Yellow, and Blue. On day two, students outlined each box with a thin black line reinforcing the brush control techniques they discussed on day one. To finish, students filled in their remaining squares with white paint. Art elements and design principles explored:
Line, space, shape, form, unity Continued Learning: Practice your brush control at home! Choose a new geometric shape (circle, triangle, square) for your work’s focus. Using a ruler, or tracing a circular object, draw a series of shapes on your paper like our squares in class. When you finish, fill in a few squares with the primary colors (red, yellow, and blue.) You can use paint, or any available coloring material at home. To complete use black to carefully outline each shape. Be sure to take your time and make the lines as smooth as possible!
Multiplication and Division Morning Help: As our walk-to-math students work hard to master 2-digit x 2-digit multiplication and long division during the upcoming math topics, those students who need a little extra help are invited to come in at 8:40am for extra practice (the teachers will be available to students from all the walk-to-math/homeroom classes). All students should be practicing math facts at school and at home right now – multiplication and division fact fluency are essential for success in 4th grade math!

Students who take the bus can come straight to math as soon as the bus arrives, and students who eat breakfast at school can grab their breakfast quickly and bring it with to math. There will be no extra morning math class on conference days as teachers will be meeting with parents at that time.
Science: Using Earth's Resources. We've started a new unit in Stemscopes Science: Using Earth's Resources. First, we'll be focusing on Natural Processes, with an emphasis on how human beings can plan for and respond to natural hazards. Next we'll be looking at Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources. In this unit students will be gathering information through research, using the design process to explore possible solutions to challenges humans face, and continuing to write CER's (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) to show their scientific thinking.
