Last week students tackled a challenging new skill in their Museo Art Lesson: basket weaving! To see all of the weaving, visit our class's online Museo Gallery. More information on the techniques students have been learning can be found on the 4th grade page of the Museo CVES website. Many thanks to our parent art volunteers and to the PTSA for funding these excellent art learning opportunities! |

While our winter wonderland sure is beautiful, it did result in a cancelled field trip. All of us (teachers and students) are very disappointed. Unfortunately, Camp Waskowitz is unable to reschedule for us. Instead, we will host the Toymaker here in March and will apply $5 of your $8 fee towards that program. With the remaining funds, each teacher will be purchasing t-shirts and supplies for a 4th grade end-of-year tradition. Students in my class will be creating tie-dyed t-shirts to sign and wear at the end of school. Thank you for your understanding.
Also, please note that our school calendar has changed. Due to snow make up days, schools will be in session on Friday, 5/24 before Memorial Day Weekend AND our last day of school is now Friday, June 14. Let’s hope that we do not need to add any more days on to the calendar in June.

Girls on the Run: The mystery word is sediment. CVES is excited to announce its first ever Girls on the Run team! Girls on the Run is an after-school program for girls in grades 3-5. Twice per week for 10 weeks, girls will have fun, make friends, run (or walk), and learn important life lessons. Trained and caring coaches lead the girls through interactive lessons and running activities. It is not just for active girls or runners...Girls on the Run is for EVERY girl! The season ends with a non-competitive 5K event.
The training schedule will be Mondays and Tuesdays from 3:30-5pm from March 4th - May 19th. Registration is open from now until January 18th. Sign your girl up today: Click Here
Social Emotional Learning: This was our class reflection on what it feels like to be left out, what steps you can take to join in with a group, and what you can do to help someone join you:
- Being left out might make someone feel angry and sad. You might feel invisible, like no one knows you’re there, or they’re ignoring you. It makes you feel like a ghost. If you want to join a group, you can stand nearby and listen and watch for a minute or so. While you’re watching, make sure you’re in a place where you can be seen. You could give a member of the group a compliment. When you’re ready to ask if you can join in, make sure you raise your voice but not so loud that it’s scary. Be sure to sound assertive and use a friendly tone of voice. Use polite words like please. If you’re in a group, it’s up to you to notice people. Every few minutes, look around and if you see someone standing around you can ask if they want to join you. Be flexible, because sometimes you might need to switch positions to let someone join in.
State standardized testing (SBAC) for 4th grade begins in May. Our testing dates are: May 9; 14; 15; 21; and 22. Please try not to schedule medical/dental appointments or vacations on these days! Thank you!
Valentine’s Day will be celebrated on Thursday, 2/14 in Room 14. All students will have a Valentine’s mail sack/bag made and decorated at school. Due to food allergies and dietary restrictions, we would like to suggest that no candy be distributed at school with student cards. Any candy on cards will NOT be opened at school; it will be sent home. More information is attached to this week's email newsletter. We will have a low key celebration that afternoon with a healthy snack of red and pink fruits and some activities.
Math Facts: Fourth grade students must be fluent in all multiplication and related division facts up to 12. Please use our on line program REFLEX https://www.reflexmath.com/go (username: [email protected]) or visit the 4th grade blog to learn strategies and interactive ways to practice math facts at home.
Larson Walk-to-Math: Topic 11 - Fraction Equivalence and Ordering
At-home Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes a night, with a goal of 100 minutes each week. Your signature is required on their weekly minute totals every Monday evening. I will be checking for signatures every Tuesday morning.
Science: We have started our next scope on Changing Land. Students will be exploring the question, “How do landforms change over time?” We will be learning about weathering, erosion, and deposition.
Reading: Having finished our study of Lewis &Clark, we are back to our ReadyGen ELA curriculum with a story called The Longest Night about a boy on his Vision Quest.
Writing: Students are working on writing opinion paragraphs with clear topic sentences, three reasons to support their opinion, and text evidence or details/examples to explain their reasons.
Conventions: We are working on correct punctuation for citing evidence in an opinion paragraph and using transition/linking phrases.
Volunteer Opportunities: Thanks, again, for all you do to support children, teachers and learning! Our class Signup can be viewed here: http://signup.com/go/UZYqOEz
