Goal for the Week: I will turn in the final draft of my Biography Report and I will get a tri-fold poster board for my wax museum presentation. The mystery word is carbohydrate. Students who have already completed those have made individual goals for the week. Good job being ahead of schedule! : )
Coming up this week in class: Learning about nutrition, exploring Economics by creating imaginary business plans, finishing Biography reports, planning Wax Museum posters and speeches, learning about energy for next week's Day of Science, and celebrating Cub Card success!
Wax /museum Project:
1. Start biography selection and read - Week of Apr. 22
2. Commit to a person and book (teacher approval) - Monday, April 29
3. Finish reading biography book and take notes - Tuesday, May 7
4. Note taking and timeline notes due - Thursday, May 9
5. Rough Draft Due - Friday, May 17
6. Bibliography / Source List complete - Week of May 20
7. Final Draft DUE - Wednesday, May 29
** Your students need a tri-fold poster board for this project. ** If you are unable to provide one, let me know!
8. Poster Due and practice presentations - Tuesday, June 4
9. Wax Museum (1-2 pm) - Friday, June 7
No Bus Passes for the Rest of the Year: We are down to one bus combining both of our routes so there is no space for extra kids to ride home with friends until the end of the year. Please let your families know about this. If kids are going home with a friend, parents will need to pick them up at school.
At-home Reading: Students are expected to read 20 minutes a night, with a goal of 100 minutes each week. Your signature is required on their weekly minute totals every Monday evening. I will be checking for signatures every Tuesday morning.
Social Studies: This week begins our mini-unit on economics. Our learning targets include:
- Understand that economics is the study of how people get the goods and services they need and want.
- Understand the relationship between consumers and products.
- Understand that cultures before us used economic systems different than what we use today.
- Understand the economics of Washington State.
Civics: The students are working with me on the Washington State OSPI required CBA (Classroom Based Assessment) in Civics called, You Decide. Students will discuss the question: Should public schools have required school uniforms for students? Students are required to:
- State a position on a public issue.
- Provide background on the issue by explaining two stakeholders’ positions.
- Include an explanation of how EITHER a right OR the common good relates to the position on the issue.
- List two sources including the title, author, type of source, and date of each source.
Nutrition: Students are learning about some key nutrients we get from food, what those nutrients do to keep our bodies healthy, and how much we need of each nutrient. This unit is a great starting point for more conversation about nutrition at home!
Making Up Instructional Time Lost Due to Snow Closures

- February 5 (will be made up on Friday, June 14)

- Converting 10 Early Release Fridays into full school days, beginning March 29 through June 7; and
